Back in the day, men were portrayed as strong, independent and in control in the media. On the other hand women were portrayed as someone who cleans the house and cooks for her family. Now, in today's media men are seen as dumb and careless, whereas the women are seen as smart and put together. The media constantly portrays men and women in either superior or inferior roles. They are rarely seen as equals on television and advertisment.Such as these adverstisments:

In my opinion it is fair that the media portrays men in this way as I feel that this way of advertising sells as we see in the comedy series on television. I feel that when they portray the men as being careless it is simply out of humor and that is how they hope the viewers see it. I think that by watching these shows that no harm can come from these shows as I find this humor to be entertaining.
ReplyDeleteThe media's purpose is to sell and entertain and this way clearly works in which one partner seems to act "dumb" which is entertaining for the viewers. I think that as people we have come a long way from the equality of men and women and what the media is doing to these images is simply for entertainment and in my eyes has no effects.
These stereotypes have no effect what so ever on the way I think of men and women as I am intelligent enough to know what advertising is and the way women and men are and act in the real world.

ReplyDeleteI don't think it is fair that the media portrays men and women in such way.It is not how every women and men behave.It is unfair because a man or a women just might be the most intelligent person out there but due to how media portrays gender , the society looks at them differently and they begin to judge without even knowing the person.

The reason why the media does not portray men and women equally because it has been functioned in our brains from generations.Also the media does their work based on stereotypes.You see this coming from generations and it still has not changed , if something has changed ,it would be how now women are considered the smart ones and men are the goofs.I don't think they will portray men and women equally ever , it might be less severe but it will still take part in media.

I definitely do think it does affect my thinking about men and women but i am also aware of that not everyone is like that.There are times that i have judged based on a stereotype but i am beginning to change that thinking especially after our discussions in class.
