Blonde vs. Brunette

In today’s society, media has portrayed women as the central point, they are considered to be perfect in every way, from head to toe. There is a lot of competition between women out there. Women are preferred to be just perfect in every kind of way; there nails need to be done, there eye brows need to be in perfect shape, they need to look pretty, and etc. Media considers women to look pretty, hot, and sexy, and then they start making assumptions on how “slutty” one looks from the other one, and how pretty and elegant the other one looks. In today’s time Blondes are pointed out in the media the most; the way they dress and the way they act. They are mostly known as “dumb blondes”. This is just ridiculous on how blondes are portrayed, just because if one blonde acts in a certain way, does not mean all blondes are like that. Not all blondes can be considered dumb! Brunettes are known as the “smart ladies”, there is no possible way that all brunettes can be smart and have same qualities. This is just stereotyping how media looks at women with blonde hair as dumb women, and how they look at women with darker hair smart. There could be brunettes out there who could be dumb, but they are never pointed out like the way blondes are pointed. For example; the two words “dumb blonde” this has been broadcasted out everywhere. If you go on internet and type in blondes, the first thing that would pop out would be “blondes are stupid” or “blondes are dumb”. They are normal women just like brunettes, and they should not be considered dumb, or pointed out in the media. This gel for women, it says at the bottom “dumb blonde”, this is an example of how blondes are broad casted as dumb everywhere. You would never find any product anywhere which would say “dumb brunettes” then why are the blondes used for such stuff? Why are they brought down/ or pointed out?

1) In your own opinion, do you think blondes are treated equally? (Like the way brunettes are treated). Explain.
2) What is your opinion about the way media portrays blondes as “dumb” and brunettes as “smart”?

  1. It is evident that blondes are not treated equally based on their portrayal in the media and what you've said. I never knew about the stereotype about brunettes being smart. I think race plays a bigger role in our assumption of a persons intelligence rather than hair colour. It just so happens that a majority of a particular race may have a dominant hair colour. I know this stereotype is wrong, but we all think it, the stereotype that Asians are intellectual. Now which is more likely to be seen, a black-haired individual of Asian descent, or blonde-haired? This might relate to our perception of intellectual females having black hair.

I find that this stereotype is wrong, but not as bad as you make it out to be. I find that the relationship between intelligence and hair colour is ridiculous. I see it more as mediocre rather than insulting. There is no basis or fact that hair colour will determine the intelligence of a person, male or female. I see the development of this stereotype as a harmless joke gone awry.

In my opinion, i think blondes are not treated equally for a fact.I know a few people that just assume as soon as they see a blonde , that she must be a "Slut" or a"dumb" blonde like mentioned in your post.If they were to be treated equally ,people would not take assumptions based on their hair colour. In fact it sounds stupid to even judge someone by its hair colour, it shows how silly people can react to certain things.

Like Tido sad , i never knew brunettes as the smart ones ,but in my opinion i think it is pretty rude to always consider blondes dumb.I mean after a while , i get annoyed hearing that lame saying of how blondes are dumb, it is very foolish of the media to portray such disrespectful comments towards to someone just because of their "hair colour".

  4. In my opinion it is ridiculous to judge a persons intelligence based on the color of their hair. This is just a huge stereotype that has been around for a long time and it is reminded to people mostly by media. People tends to judge all blondes based on one blondes action. There are both “dumb” and “smart” blondes out there. There hair color does not define how smart they are. In my opinion some blondes get bad reputation because of guys. Some guys, not all of course tend to go for blondes because they think they are easier girls to get. So then blondes get a bad reputations if they fall for it. There are many smart blondes like Allen, Pink, Jessica Simpson, Marylin Monroe ect...

  5. 1) In your own opinion, do you think blondes are treated equally? (Like the way brunettes are treated). Explain.

In my opinion i think that blondes are treated equally as brunettes, its the way you carry yourself that makes someone else find you attractive it has nothing to do with your hair color, its the same thing with your intelligence. If someone is smart theyre going to flaunt it, and thats what makes a person judge you, theyre not going to look at your hair color and judge you, thats an old stereotype as yaimery said, no one even thinks of that anymore!
    2) What is your opinion about the way media portrays blondes as “dumb” and brunettes as “smart”?
My opinion about the way media portrays blondes and brunettes is very funny, i think its just another way to make money, media sells anything and feeds every and any idea they have into peoples minds. If the new `trend`is to be blonde and act dumb people will follow the trend.

  6. 1. In my opinion, I do not think that blondes are treated equally as brunettes. I do not understand how you can relate hair color with intelligence. But I agree with Tito, I think that many of us, including myself, find that Asians are very smart and since most are usually dark-haired, than we think that blondes are not as intelligent.

2.I personally find the way media portrays blondes is not right and it is outrageous to think that someone is not smart because of the color of their hair. In addition, in shows we see many blondes who are characterized as being clueless. Like the movie "Clueless" which is about a blonde girl. Although I believe that it is not right to be prejudice to blondes, in shows I find them to be very funny when they have dumb blondes.
Everyone depending their race and/or culture are viewed in a certain way in media like for example, in shows many races are viewed in certain ways. Like black people being ghetto and violent and caucasians being conservative and wholesome.
Media sells false information all the time, and it is up to people to be realistic and not prejudge someone.

  7. 1) The blondes are definitely not treated well. There are very few blondes who are respected by the media and people. To answer your question Mehwish, I was honestly unaware of the stereotype that brunettes are considered as smart. Talking about blondes though, most blondes, as stated by you, are portrayed to be stupid, sensuous, and sometimes hyperactive people. The media portrays blondes (in a bad light) to such a large extent that it would sort of overshadow the smartness of brunettes. Maybe this is why I am unaware of the stereotypes about brunettes.

    2) It does not make sense to me to judge people based on their hair colour. I mean I can colour my hair as blond (imagining it is really funny) and for all of a sudden (hey there you go!) I am stupid. It does not work that way. You cannot tag every blonde as “stupid” just because of one or two blondes, really, are stupid. Plus, in all my memory or in the news, no study has declared that a person’s intellectual quotient is determined by their hair colour. If it was that way, most people would be sensible enough to colour their hair the colour, which makes them smart.

  8. Blondes are definitely not treated the same as brunettes just because of how movies and the media portrays them. In most videos where there us a blonde she is usually rich, popular and stupid. In most of the movies they feed off getting others down to make themselves look good and liked by everyone else. The blondes are usually the ones to make stupid remarks that should be "common sense" or do something simply but it becomes such a huge deal because their "stupid"
My opinion of how the media treats blondes and brunettes is that blondes should not feed of what they media says so makes them look but try to change it. In other words if a person is blonde they should act stupid or act uneducated just because they are "blonde" but yet challenge what the media wants them to be and be the opposite. Also, I feel like a lot of people think its cute to be blonde because apparently they have more fun or are liked better. People need to understand that the little things in life ie. the colour of ones hair, doesn't guarantee them happiness or friendships in life. The only way we can change the way media portrays certain things is by not listening to it or simply not feeding into it.

  9. It is very clear that blonds are treated and looked upon differently. They are most likely know as the super model hot chicks, the heartless popular girl in high school, or the really dumb one. People, from time, have been making “dumb blond” jokes and it is use as a phrase today, like “you so blond” even when you are not blond. For example the movie “Legally Blond”, the protagonist is a ‘girly girl’, bright student, who is studying for law. And to her disappointment people from the university she attends do not take her serious and she was only selected to enter an internship because of her looks not because of her intelligence. All the characters underestimated her intelligence anyways, but at the end she proves that she is more then a “blondy”.
It is just very foolish to think people intelligence is seen by their hair. Anyone could dye their hair another colour, so would that concept apply to the too? (people should not even try to answer that. Everyone works at their own paste and understands things differently. So we should not judge people on appearance.

    2) What is your opinion about the way media portrays blondes as “dumb” and brunettes as “smart”?
In my opinion I think that even though this stereotype has been around for a while, I along with others I know don't think less of a woman or girl because of the color of her hair. Speaking for the guys that I hang around with, the hair color is the last thing we look on a girl and it certainly doesn't give us an impression on her IQ. We've all heard the blonde jokes but up until this blog I never though people actually took them serious. I think that is just ignorance because in today's world a girl or a guy for that matter can dye her/his hair and according to society fits with the normal image. I think that blond or brunette doesn't make a difference on how we judge a person but simple on how the person carries her/himself.

My opinion is the media pays people find out what sells and as ridiculous as it sounds these rumors catch people's attention in magazines and television. The problem with the media being allowed to do this is that this stereotype will stick for generations to come and who's to say that the media tomorrow doesn't start a rumor that has the same affects as this stereotype.

  11. I think that its no fair that blondes are treated the way they are because hair color does not make an individual smarter or dumber. To be honest I don’t know how the whole situation with blondes being categorized as dumb all started but im sure its something stupid like the other article I was reading about Ginger people being kicked by Sumayah. I think they compare Brunettes to blondes and when blondes are suppose to be the dumb ones then they obviously have to have smart people to so I don’t think that any of this is true.

I honestly do not understand how they can call someone dumb because of their hair color, it jus does not make sense to me. I saw a video on youtube that I wanted to share with people, that is pretty funny but sad at the same time because of the way they portray blonds. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7JhaDMQH2mQ)
