Hello All!
I realize that some of you weren't in class today, so I though I'd post on our blog to let you know of a few things we covered today. First off, the quiz we had scheduled for this Wednesday, November 9th, will be moved to this Friday, November 11th. Once again, the quiz will be on Friday, November 11th. The quiz will predominantly focus on the media and gender studies terms and the key concepts of media literacy. If you are missing any of the handouts that dealt with these terms, please see me and I'll be sure you have them.
Also, today I introduced a Film Deconstruction Assignment that you are responsible for writing after we watch the movie Anonymous. See below for the instructions (you can get a hard copy in class on Wednesday):

Film Deconstruction Assignment
You will be responsible for writing a clear and concise film review of the movie Anonymous, which we will watch on our field trip on November 8th (if you are unable to attend the movie and do not have the opportunity to arrange a time to see Anonymous out of class, speak with Mr. Henry about finding a suitable alternative that you can view on your own time).
The review will take the form of a media deconstruction. You are expected to effectively utilize the terms and concepts that we have discussed in class e.g. dominant discourse, lens etc.
Criteria
¨ Your review should be approximately 400 words long
¨ Your review should have a catchy title
¨ Your review should analyze (deconstruct) the film in the context of the concepts and terms that we’ve examined in our media studies unit
¨ This assignment is due on Wednesday, November 16th
Some Key Issues to Consider:
¨ All media are constructions, and film is a medium. What attitudes and values are represented in the film? Anonymous is a period piece that takes place in the Elizabethan era in England; are there any connections between representations of gender or morality in this historical time and today?
¨ Audiences negotiate meaning: Each audience member, based on their own knowledge, religious affiliation, belief and value system, experience and environment, will interpret the narrative and its relation to history in a way that makes sense to them. What meaning do you get from this film and why? How might others understand it differently?

I'll be posting an example of a Film Deconstruction shortly.
See you all tomorrow!
Mr. Henry
