Vanity Insanity

Throughout the years women have evolved from strict house wives to flappers who rebelled against every rule society gave to them, to gaining rights to vote and independence. Now, what have we become?? And where are we going?? its funny that we who analyze media can see these things but still we get caught up in the glitz and glamour the meida protrays and we can acknowledge these poeple as fake but yet we still idolize them and want to be like them. These are the people we look up to. If we see these people as fake or unrealistic why do we want to be like them so much?? For example Isabelle Caro, Snooki, Kim Kardashian, Nicki Minaj, Britney Spears, Amy Whinehouse and the list goes on.

At this point in time the damage has been done, its going to be hard to change but we can only try from here on to come up with a solution to over come this epidemic.
I would ask you to take a minute out and read this. It's called "Craigslist Gold Digger" and this really shows what women have reduced themselves to in today's society.

  1. After reading the Craiglist post i was completely shocked at the bluntness of the lady who posted it. She was openly saying that she is a gold digger and that beauty trumps over everything else. I feel that media has a huge role in this because she says she sees plain ladies with rich husbands and she doesn't understand why she cant find one. Media always portrays rich men married to beautiful women. They also portray these women as skinny, seductive, tall ladies and don't focus on their personalities.

By media not focusing on these ladies personalities it makes the viewers especially females believe that your personality doesn't matter and the only thing you should focus on is your looks. The Craiglist lady is an example of this. Throughout her whole post she never once mentioned anything about her personality and I feel like that is the default as to why she cant find anyone. The students in the video also talk about how much they focus on there looks and how it affects them.

My question it everyone reading this is who made this definition of what beautiful is. Who said you have to be skinny, have clear skin, dress well and have lots of makeup to look pretty. The main culprit is the media and although we are becoming media aware students we still fall into believing this definition of beauty and I want to know how we can get everyone to change this.

  2. I loved the response the woman was given by the male. The male blended sense into his reply with a “read-in-between-the-lines” style. I am quite sure that the woman will not exactly understand what the man actually means. The woman sounds terribly desperate to land in that “perfect man” who earns around (or more) $500,000 and financially satisfies her. Her mentality, to me, is very cheap as she analyzes the society around her with insensibility. What I feel is that the reason behind the media derogating women all the time is because of women such as this “gold-digger”. To add to this, there is also a song by Kanye West, titled as “Gold-Digger”, which examines the same issue of women marrying or dating men just for their money in a rap song.

The video you posted is an eye-opener for me. First of all, it was excellently directed. The title “MISSREPRESENTATION” was apt for the subject of the short film. Many women have downgraded themselves to sex objects and nothing else that media has become so derogatory to women, in general. Many women in the video talked about how the portrayal of women in the media needs to change. I say that action needs to be taken here rather than words, or else things will never change. How about the directors in Hollywood try presenting females in movies in roles anyone would never imagine them to play (such as mercenaries, because we usually see males – let us just say for the sake of change in media)? That is just one small example. Action needs to be taken on a grand scale with the help of amelioration as just a stepping stone. The task on our hands is not easy, to say the least.

  4. All i want to say is that , it is very true " It's all about the body , not about the brain". I really agree with this because if you look take a close look in our society ,people mostly approach or want to date someone because they are attractive but what they don't notice is someone's intelligence when that is the most important part of an individual. In addition, I would like to agree with what akshay said previously and how it was well directed and the title "MISSREPRESENTATION" say's it all. Women really need to stand up for themselves and represent Intelligence and quit focusing on Body image.

  5. I don't know if i'm allowed to say this but "LOL", i agree with you totally Monique, but damn! I LOVE kim kardash but i have to relate her to this post, shes my idol on some levels but her marriage to Kris Humphries made her look so bad on many levels. She spent a lot of money on her wedding which was 10 million and ended up making 17 million in return, making her a profit of 7 million. Also another celebrity that made a lot of money is Kendra a former girlfriend of Hugh Hefner, it makes women look so bad, that they're not independent enough, and without men they cant really do anything for themselves. Both of the females i related the post to are attractive woman that i must admit, they only got their fame and fortune due to their looks.

  6. I think it’s very hard for women to be taken seriously in society. Women aren’t usually noticed for their intelligence, but more for their appearance. Many images in the media suggest that woman have a higher standard of beauty to live up to, whereas the appearance for men isn’t critiqued as much. Females are seen so one dimensional in society and it can often seem like it’s not a woman’s place to run for president or prime minister. It’s difficult for women to get treated with the same respect as men and their abilities are typically underestimated. I think celebrities like Snooki and Kim Kardashian portray a certain image to the public but it’s really only for entertainment purposes. While Snooki was being interviewed she mentioned having an alter ego she’s “Snooki” on the reality show “Jersey Shore” and Nicole when she wants to be taken seriously. This proves to me, a lot of the images shown on reality shows aren’t real and limit the public to only what they see in the media. I also think the media is wrapped around negative images and exaggerate any story concerning females. It’s very rare to hear positive stories about our favorite celebrities; instead we are bombarded with false accusations and information. Women in the media that do represent a positive image like Tyra Banks, Gabby Sidibe, Raven Simone, etc. aren’t discussed and publicized in the media as much. This tells you something about our society; people find the negative images more appealing than positive images because it’s more entertaining.

  8. I am really glad that you posted this. This is a perfect example of the kind of impact media puts on people today, especially young women.
I agree with what Jane Fonda said how "Media creates conscientiousness" and how if its determined by men then we cannot progress. I believe that women are constantly put under pressure to look and be a certain way. They are so many female youths out there who are not satisfied with how they look and who knows if they ever will. If men are to put out images and ideas of how women should look then women will never be able to advance in life.
I feel that they are definitely men in high positions in media that like to think of women as sex toys. Something you can play around with until they are amused.
There are so many women who are insecure about themselves and I think that the media should be putting out more messages about loving yourself for who you are rather than feeling the need to go out and buying a number of products because they will make you more appealing. In result, making company corporations richer all because you fell for their trap.
Like Sefra said, we need more positive images and spread the word about body peace. Teens and youths today need real role models not plastic models. We should not give into the messages from the media or else these negative messages to young women will continue to flourish.. making it superior over us. Then men would think low of us because we think low of ourselves.

  9. This is a very entertaining and funny article. I am just shocked that a women would degrade herself so much as to lower her values(if this woman even has any values). I agree with what some of you said, this woman is showing people that in order to get married to a successful man its all about the looks and not about the potential of the person. Many men in the media like athletes date women based on their looks and how good she will make him look as a man. Marriage is a very serious commitment and should be treated as such. I agree that money is important in general, but we should not base relationships especially marriage on looks or how much a person makes. If a relationship is just about money it will end badly.
