Today's media shows women as objects in which contain little value. The media degrades women and sends negative messages on how women should be treated. Women are shown as sexual objects. People look to the media to show them how they should act and dress and what is considered sexy. This is affecting women in how they view themselves in the mirror and is affecting the younger generation of girls on how society expects them to look and act which cause women to have a discomforting self image.
The media is affecting young women aged 15 to 30 which are a prime target for these industries and purchase eighty percent of all consumer products are purchased by women in this age group. Many women and young girls are exercising more then is expected, starving themselves, or getting plastic surgery to achieve to look like the models portrayed in the media. I personally have noticed that the younger generations are more occupied with trying to look and act as the media portrays girls their age to do then with enjoying their time as kids. Women and teenage girls are so busy with trying to be as this ideal image that they are loosing focus in school and their preparation for their future.
I feel that this link touches upon the different issues women and young girls face when they watch television and when they read magazines.
Girls are becoming weight conscious as young as 8 years old
80% of 9 year olds are on diets
Eating disorders have grown 400% since 1970
Is this justifiable?
How do you feel that children raised in today's society have a certain image in which they are expected to look like?
How can we put a stop to this for our children and their future?
1.) I do think its justifiable, because there is so much pressure out there, in the media, at school, job interviews, almost everywhere you go. Eventually, a young women would look at herself and ask if she stacks up with the others.
ReplyDelete2.) I feel that children raised up today in our society feel that they need to be with the in-crowd, if there not, they feel left out and so they do whatever it takes to fit in with the latest happenings and sometimes take it too far.
3.) I think we can put a stop to this if everyone chips in and do their own little part. It doesn't take one person but it can all start with one person who is followed by another, who is then followed by another and it goes on.
The way women are seen as sexual and not necessary by there intelligence is very disturbing and unfair. Women have so much to offer and have too many expectations, and the media just narrow the chances of growing-up girls to create their own sense of image. It is like we have to look a certain way, or act a certain way, and that is not what the young generations should think like. The way to stop this is by educating the children at home first about acceptance and that God has created us unique and different for an important purpose. When the education is funded in the children minds then they would be able to view things through different lens and would most likely think twice before believing something that they are not and would identify the difference from good and bad portrayals like, the possibility of anorexia coming from a model that is a size zero. When the child also feels and sees the care and how important they are to the family, then they would probably be an outspoken person, that in anyway has an issue, the family is there to insure secure, comfort and love.
ReplyDeleteI think it is justifiable, like Hassani said, there is one time that a person looks at themselve, and a person does easily get influence, like there are soo many things out that you want to look at or try. What I don't find is right is that now days there is so much competeition that a women should look like a certain way, or else shes not perfect, and all of this is coming on us teens and even younger kids. Kids who are not even teens, who are only 9, are looking at themselve and trying to make themself look better whether thats with makeup, or other products. Women are just like a toy for media, they are only used for their body, nothing else, and they are expected to have a perfect body and everything else.
ReplyDeleteI do not think that the way women are treated in the media is justifiable because there is a lot more to a women then the media portrays. For example the media shows that most women are stupid or they have less value then men. Although I agree with you because I believe that women are the prime target audience. Usually women are the easiest targets in these particular situations where a women is degraded. Men also suffer in the eye of the media with means of being strong or masculine, in my opinion I think that women suffer more.Children who are raised in today's society have a lot more to pressure and perceptions to endure than the past generation because I think that the media is only escalating with the messages that it portrays. We can stop children from the future by limiting their viewing of the media to a minimum.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your answers, because I feel black people aren’t represented well in the media even with a successful man like Barak Obama. The media reveals black people very negatively and I think a lot of children aren’t exposed to positive representations of blacks. There attitude reflects the images we see in media about black people being a hustler, being in the NBA, and getting money by selling drugs this is often how the males are portrayed. The females are often seen inferior to men, gold diggers, and seen as sexual objects in music videos. These negative images do affect children’s view on black people; in the video its clear boys and girls black and white tend to think black is the bad colour.
