How media affects Beauty and Body Image.

Women body parts sell just about everything now days, such as cars, clothes, food, pills to loose weight etc...Magazines and TV commercials usually talk about how to loose those 20 pounds so you can fit on that new dress you bought. If they did loose it they would have a perfect life and perfect marriage. Meida uses Celebrities and gorgeous models to get women who are insecure about the way they look and how thin or over weight they are to buy their products. In my opinion media affects the body image of women whom are in their teens negatively by looking at this magazines and advertisements of thin beautiful models. Teens over stress about the way they look because at this age they try to impress that cute boy in class or they want to show off at school etc... I've read many articles before stating how many teens suffer from a common eating disorder called anorexia. They starve because they are afraid of gaining weight so they go hours and hours without eating just so that they can look like the model they saw in the magazine or in the commercial with a cute guy. Most women are afraid of aging or looking over weight specially because we go through things such as pregnancy where women goes through an emotional and depression state. This is when media steps up and make commercials and advertisements about how to loose the pounds gained through pregnancy and how to look goergeous again. Women are all different and should not look the way media portraits them we all come from different families and we all have different genes therefor we are all different we do not need to be like anyone else other then our selves. We need to appreciate what we've got and stop media from trying to make us different from whom we really are.

Q1). At what age do you think media takes most effect in women?

Q2). Why is media constantly saying that womens body needs to be adjusted in some way?

Q3). Do you beleive that women should look the way media portraits them?

  1. 1. The media takes most effect on a teen at the age of puberty around
the ages of 10 and up. I say this because this is the age when females
    begin to understand there bodies.
    2. The media presents these images this way because that is their
ideology of the way women should be.
    3. I believe that women should be in shape because its better for health purposes but the media has no right to dictate right from wrong.

  2. I agree with Monique, the media probably starts to take the most effect of females at the age of 10 and up. I think that the media is constantly trying to show society that woman's bodies need to be adjusted because of how they think a woman's body should look like. Also because they're using that idea to make women buy their products so they can look exactly how the media says they should.

I believe that woman shouldn't believe the media to that great of an extent. They should be able to look the way they do without being criticized and intimidated by the media and everyone around them.

  4. Agreed with Monique. I think it also depends on the person. Someone can be really insecure and the media can start affecting them at a young age whereas someone who is confident in who they are might not really pay that much attention to the media. I really feel like some idiot came up with this idea that women should look a certain way because it was his/her idea of perfect.

I don't believe that women should believe any of that because even the models you see on billboards have to be retouched and 'fixed'. I honestly think that everyone has something beautiful about them and its about embracing the positives rather then the negatives.

  5. 1) I agree with Christina’s point of view. I think the media starts taking the most effect on women when they are in their teenage. A reason is how many female models pose for popular magazines and teenage girls (on Facebook or Twitter) post pictures with similar expressions. The teenage girls are affected in a way where they believe that whatever the media expresses to us is the norm.

    2) Media wants to women to “adjust” their bodies in some way because they need to have the perfect body for portrayal, which men would crave for. It takes a reflex (for a boy, man – basically a male) to look at a beautiful female. Attraction or infatuation is inevitable towards someone who is good looking.

    3) I believe women should not preach whatever is portrayed by the media. All women should make efforts to create their own identity and not beautify themselves according to what the media conveys. Individuality is important. Personally, I would prefer a woman who is smart and reasonably beautiful compared to a woman who puts on revealing outfits and very “beautiful” (forget her intellectual capabilities).

The portrayal of women in modern media downgrades them to sex objects (no offence to women as I am actually going to defend them here). I dislike how female models pose in a provocative manner (okay – I do like some pictures though). These factors lead to the perversion of males. I find it disgusting when many males derogate females when they talk amongst themselves. Women can go light years ahead of men, if they want to. This is why I always try my best to never use words in my vernacular, which belittle women and keep my brain clean of any dirty temptations.

  7. 1)I agree with most of you that media does take affect mostly when a girl is in her teenage years , even though it takes affect on kids once they begin to understand Gender roles. It mostly takes affect during the teenage years because that is when they begin to experience the world and begin to go out and do all sorts of stuff. They realize what kind of women get attention and what people like on t.v so they decide to become just like them.

2)The reason why the media is constantly saying that a woman's body needs to be adjusted is because it profits them. Referring to what Akshay said , a man is attracted towards a woman that has the perfect body ,cheek bones, and clean skin etc. For men thats an ideal women.

    3) I absolutely do not think that women should portrait themselves as they are shown in the media. It does not allow so many women to be themselves and to be comfortable with what they have.I am not saying that they should leave themselves the way they were born , it is fine to dress up and look good but to an extent. A lot of women go out of their way to look a certain way when they should not have to.They can easily be comfortable with what they have and live their lives.

  8. I agree and disagree with you yaimery on different points. In your post you said “We need to appreciate what we've got and stop media from trying to make us different from whom we really are” I agree when you say we need to appreciate what we got but I disagree when you say we have to stop media from trying to change us. I understand what you mean by it, but it is our choice to follow what media says or to not. I know the media is very convincing and makes strong points that really get to a person but in the end it’s our own mind that decided if we go through with something or not.

  9. To Sergio: I know it is everyone’s choice to do or not what media tells them too, but did you watch the video posted? The girl in that video died at the age of 26 for trying to make her self skinny to qualify for those pictures because she was not thin enough to the photographer. Media is pretty convincing I my self buy products because of how good they look on commercials or in the magazines. I am just saying we need to try to stop media to adjust us women from the way we look. However I know this will not be an easy thing to accomplish since media plays a big role in everyone’s life now days.

  10. I think that media takes the most effect on women from puberty and up. This is because once a girl as started developing the media starts showing her that her body should develop and look a certain way and if it doesn’t look like that, then there is something wrong that “isn’t right”

I believe that the media is constantly saying that a women’s body needs to be adjusted in some way because the media is mostly made of men who have these fantasies of how a women should look like. Also, I believe that the media says this because we as women ourselves idolize these kinds of women that look like that. We adore them, we wish to be like them so in a way we give them power. I only say this because the people who portray women to look a certain way only do so because they know every women wouldn’t mind looking like that too.

I definitely don’t believe that women should look like the way media portrays them because even the women in the media don’t look like that, so why copy a fake?

  11. 1.I think there is not a set age for women for media to take affect on them. The media only takes affect on a woman when they actually let the media take affect on them. Its up to them to if they should believe the media or not.
    2. I think the media is constantly telling women to keep adjusting their body in some way because they know most women would beleive in what they are saying and they can make profits from women who are trying to be like that celebrity they saw on T.V.
    3. No, I do not think women should look the way the media portrays them. The media does not have the right to decide how one should look. I think it's up to that individual to decide how they should live, look etc.

  12. I believe the age that the media takes affect on girls is their teen years. The reason being is because there is peer pressure to look and act a certain way because of the media. The media is constantly saying that women need to adjust their body image because they want money. They say if you want to look like this model or this actress then go on this diet or buy this product and women are constantly going out and getting these products. The media gave women and girls this distorted image of beauty that is unrealistic and they are constantly trying to look like something that is not real. This leads to women becoming anorexic, bulimic and having other eating disorters. I think that women should not try to achieve the media’s perspective of a ‘perfect’ body because it is unreal. Every women or girl is shaped differently and trying to become what the media says is beautiful is a waste of time and from watching the Dove campaign for beauty we see that the models themselves don’t really look like the billboards and the pictures in the magazine.

  13. Q1). At what age do you think media takes most effect in women?

I think it depends on what stage a girl is going through puberty, many girls at the age of 13 care about their looks hair and make-up and some teenagers are just starting to care because of the choices their friends make. I guess it all depends on influence to and who your role models are, if majority of the people you look up to are in the media, your going to fall in the medias trap.

Q2). Why is media constantly saying that womens body needs to be adjusted in some way?

I think that the media is just always trying to make money, if more women fall in the trap of the media and think that their body is always going to need to be adjusted, they're going to go out and buy all the make-up products and sketchers to tone their buttocks to make themselves feel beautiful.

Q3). Do you beleive that women should look the way media portraits them?

I also think that women should look they way media portrays them to a certain extent, with all the extras breast implants, buttocks enlargements, and face lifts its honestly not needed. But where fashion is concerned i think there should be a boarder line there where woman can look to the media to know what they should dress like and what looks good!

  14. 1) Media takes most effect on women at their teen years. Those are the years that girls go through their puberty and starting to think more about their appearance. Most girls start to interest in social networking, magazines and begin to experience the world at their teen years. So they believe the image that media shows them is the ideal image of women that the society interested in.

2)Media's approach of showing women's body needs to be adjusted is definitely about making money. Media knows that when women see the same image over and over again, they realize that they should buy those products to be like the attractive women on TV.

3)I don't think that women should look the way media portraits them because every person is different from each other and each individual has their own beauty. Also media has no rights to decide how someone should look like. The biggest problem is most of women don't know most of images of beautiful women in those advertisements were made by using Photoshop. So there're no point of normal women going to be like one of those women that media portrays as attractive even if they use those products.

  15. Q1) I guess it would depend on the female, but there are girls who are effected by the media at the young age of 5.

Q2) I guess it's because of what they think the ideal female body looks like and the also I feel that society is mostly run by man.

Q3) Women shouldn't look the way media portrays them because we all come in different shapes, size and colours.Instead of trying to look like the female portrayed in the add females should learn how to embrace their body for how it is. Women should also remember that the females on the add go through so much make up and effect that they are not natural

  16. 1. I think that media takes most affect to women when they begin to hit puberty. So my guess is when they begin grade 6, around the age of 11-12. But it all varies from person to person due to thoughts, perspectives, experiences, influences, etc.

    2. I think that the media is constantly telling women that they need to be physically adjusted because ages ago, women were more seen as second-class citizens and they were always being criticized by men and altered to fit their desire to look and be a certain way. So I guess the idea even up till today has not entirely changed.

    3. Absolutely not. I do not think women have fit the portrayal media makes them seem. We all different in our way and why would we all want to look the same. It would be boring, in my opinion. Our individuality is what separates us from others and its what gets us noticed.

  17. 1 – I agree with most of the bloggers that at the age of 10 media targets girls and women. For instance we see how most of the Disney characters in shows they are slim girls. That is where the media affects girls, because they are looking up to these girls on shows and what to copy their image. After that people continue to look up to there elders like Selena Gomez, who has matured and promotes body peace.
2 – The media continues to advertise the ideal body or image because they want to create a “better world” and create awareness on a healthy life style, but what is fired back on the media is the continuation of a perfect skin, like models in add campaigns. Most of the models are size ‘zero’, tall and fitted people. To my understanding this is just beneficial to those selling a product and use, the consumers, believe things would really work for us.
3 – I believe women should be live a healthy life style and should be more conscious on themselves and what really makes you and your family happy. They should not depend of products itself because you need to contribute and put work and effort in becoming what you want to be. Therefore, when looking at the next diet advertisement we should view it through different lens so, that you are not disappointed at the end results and have to be more open minded on the faze range of opportunities out there.

I think that the teenage years of the girl are the years in which the media has the biggest effect
The media advertises this as they have a sole purpose which is to earn a profit and it certainly has worked and keeps on doing so.
I believe that it wouldn't hurt for women to look as the media portrays them but I know that this is affecting the up coming generations and is ruining the image of smart and caring in which a women should try to be like.
