A stereotype that exists is that men make better leaders than women. As seen in this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jIRWrzsfDs most of the people who answered just laughed and said "no".
My question is do you think men make better leaders than women or do women make better leaders than men? Explain why.
I think that there is no difference between a woman being the boss or a man. I believe in the time that we are in now, that both genders are equal. Some people are sexist towards this and try to keep the male the dominant force but most companies are coming around and choose their boss for who they are and their qualities, rather then by their gender. Both men and women have the qualities to become leaders and that gender should not be a factor to choosing who should lead.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what Sergio said. In general, it cannot be stated that men are better leaders than women in the present society.
ReplyDeleteHowever there are obvious differences between the two genders mentally and physically. These differences may allow them to have more leadership in some fields than in others. Building on to what one of the people in the video said, women may be a better leader in a situation where caring and empathy is involved where as a male would be a better leader in a career situation where physical strength is involved. Though these differences cannot be ignored, we can’t say that one situation is better than the other in real life. Therefore we can’t say that males are better leaders than women.
It is true that some people just laughed and said “no”. These may be people who have not experienced situations with female leadership. Since most of the media reflects on the stereotype that men are better leaders than women, these individuals have only seen that stereotype as well. However for someone who has seen both situations, it would not be difficult to say that both genders are equal leaders.
I agree with Sergio and Kasun. We shouldn't be thinking in today's society whether or not a female or male makes a better boss or leader. We also shouldn't be trying to differentiate between the two based on genders. To make a great leader or boss someone has to have a lot of different skills and that is based on the individual, not on their gender. Some of the people in the video just laughed and said “no” when they were asked if women were better leaders than men. I think that most of those answers were based on a negative stereotype towards women. The other people in the video who actually had a serious and honest opinion based it on their own experiences and not on a stereotype.
ReplyDeleteI most defiantly agree with you all. We are all different and both a men and women can make a great boss. Saying that a men or a women could make a better boss is stating a stereotype towards either gender. A boss should be the person who has all the skills needed and intelligence not based on weather or not you’re male of female. However I do have another opinion and I think men might make not better, but more likely to be the bosses because men are not as emotional as women are. I think that women are usually jealous of one another and try to make things hard. I think that women should stop trying to compete with one another and get along so that we can make better bosses.
ReplyDeleteI seem to have a different opinion than the people that have commented before me. I believe that women are better leaders and managers than men. Although i may be a little biased because i am a female i have also come across many studies that prove my point.
ReplyDeleteHere is an article about it.http://www.businessweek.com/2000/00_47/b3708145.htm
The article says that through extensive research, the researchers found that women got higher ratings than men on almost every skill measured. The funny thing about it is that the researchers weren't trying to differentiate between the 2 genders but happened to come across it when conducting the study.
Although i believe that women do make better leaders and managers than men i am also not encouraging for people to choose a female over a male because you never know, the man can be 10 times better than the female. It should be based on their skills and not their genders.
I agree with everyone above. It really doesn't matter whether or not you're a man or female because in the end your physical traits have nothing to do with whether or not you would make a good boss or not. It's about who you are as a person and there are some men AND women who have ugly personalities which wouldn't make them fit for a job which includes interacting with others. It might have been believed that men were always better then women at anything a few years back but now a days we're all equal so I don't think we can assume that a specific gender is better than the other.
ReplyDeleteI agree with everyone who said that there is no particular gender that is better at being a leader. It does not depend on what your gender is, but the kind of characteristics you have that would make an ideal leader.
ReplyDeleteLike Sergio said, gender should not be a factor to whose a good leader.
The interviewees that commented and said 'no' to women being a better leader than men are probably not used to seeing females in a powerful position. We are all accustomed to veiwing men in high and dominant positions than women because we have not seen female presidents and such.
I definitely don’t think that men make better leaders then women but it something that’s we have become accustom to over the years that we find its right. I only say this because for so many years there has only been male leaders and a few female leaders who lasted for sometime. There should be no reason why women can’t be as good of a leader as man. After all we all are humans and I’m sure that there are many females in this world that have great or even better ideas better then male leaders but aren’t given the chance to voice their opinions. Also, I believe that in the kind of world we live in no male wants to be under the control of a female. I only say this because women look at women as something they should take care of and protect so for a female to have such power and have then under the control of them almost makes them feel less of a man. But over all both sexes should be capable of being great leaders.
ReplyDeleteAs most people commented already, I do not think it makes a difference whether a female is a leader or a male. Be it a male or female, one needs to have qualities such as people skills and great communication skills which are essential in order to be a good leader. As Kasun mentioned, males are preferred for certain roles in the society where physical strength is required to do a job. As we all know, most males are physically stronger than females. In such scenarios, it is understandable to say a male would make a better leader than a female. On the other hand, females are suitable for leadership roles where emotion comes into play. The dominant discourse is that females are more emotional than males. Furthermore, I think those who laughed in the video have been exposed to the stereotypes that men make better leaders than women do or the fact that they have never been under the leadership of a female. The word “leader” is connoted with a man due to the media.
ReplyDeleteI slightly agree with what everyone has said while I think it's based on one's skill that makes one a true a leader, I still think men make better leaders then women. I think so because I think most women takes thing too personally and then they let it affect them thus affecting their leadership while they are doing their job, while a man on the other hand would not take things to personally and keep his focus on being the leader. I think this is the case 80% of the time. However the other 20% of there would be that female leader that can be better than the male at not over reacting.
ReplyDeleteI believe that men do not make better bosses then women, I have to say it doesn’t matter whether you are male or female it depends on the skills you have. It was kind of shocking to see in today’s society that some people still distinguish between genders rather then on the skills someone has. All this is just stereotypes that men make better bosses than women. In my opinion it does not depend on the fact that some women are more emotional then men. I think that it is wrong to take some characteristics of women and say that they cannot be good leaders because of it. The reason that there is so much controversy about this topic is because there are not enough known strong female leaders, everyone is used to seeing men in charge so when there are female bosses some people assume that they are not as good as men. At the end of the day it doesn’t matter if the boss is male or female it depends on the skills and the education that someone has for the job.
ReplyDeleteI do not think that gne gender can be a better boss than the other. I know women out there that are much stronger emotionally than some men.People believe that Men can be better because they can keep their Personal life out of their Professional life. That is not the case, maybe majority of men tend to do that , but what really matters is if a person has the skills to become a boss not if its a man or a women.
ReplyDeleteI honestly think that there should be no difference between man and woman when it comes to leadership. Both men and women have different strengths, for example being the president of a country, a man can have the strength to declare war, and a woman may not.A woman might care more about health care and sheltering the homeless more than a man would, it doesn't make either one a better leader. I agree with Kiran, it truly takes the skills of a person to make them a leader, has nothing to do with their gender.
ReplyDeleteMen make better leaders than woman, not because of their skill but because of their reliability. I feel that a man and a woman have equal skills and are no different, but in today's society I feel that more woman have reduced self confidence compared to men. This low self-esteem is most likely due to the media's influence upon the female generation. Although it can be argued whether a female can make a better leader, its whether its followers will accept them as one. This quality makes men the better leader because they are seen as more experienced due to the majority of world leaders being male.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion it doesn't matter about the gender it matter on what they can deliver. I guess some people would think that men make better leaders because most leaders in the world are men. It's now that we are starting to see more powerful females ex. Michelle Obama and Hilary Clinton.
ReplyDeleteI have to disagree with Tito because I think that it doesn’t matter if a woman or Man is a better leader. As long as the individual has the credentials to be a good leader then I don’t see why it matters if it’s a male or a female. That’s my opinion but in the end there are still some sexiest companies that only want male leaders but keep it on the low and don’t make it obvious so their company doesn’t get affected.
ReplyDeleteMy question is do you think men make better leaders than women or do women make better leaders than men? Explain why.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion I believe that both men and women can make great leaders. It is really about the way you work, and how good you are as a leader or a team player. There are women out there who are not that straight with work, they do have an emotioanl side, like they may feel pitty if something happened to her worker, and some are just pin straight, all they care about is work. There are also men who are like that, they are not straight with work and like fool around, this is the reason why I said both make good leaders. It really depends on wo the person is, a man can be lasy, or a women can be lasy we cannot really blame any one of them. I agree with what Sergio said, that there are companies who are sexist and only welcome men as the leaders, I really dont think that is right, It really just depends on the person, men can be dumb so can women be. You cannot just hire a man thinking that yes men make good leaders!
Many would be surprised with my decision but I believe that women make better leaders then men because of their history and determination.
ReplyDeleteIf history has taught us anything it is that the wars fought by men are for greed and power in which every man wishes to be the alpha male and reacts without thinking. Women are know to take their time and plan their route to ensure success. This is just an opinion as it would depend on the circumstances as there are men who would be better leaders then women and vise verse.
